Connecting to Wifi & Ethernet on the New Network

The campus network is being upgraded over a multi-year process. As each building is upgraded, the wireless network names will be different and connections to the wired network require authentication. Please visit the network upgrade project website to learn more about the upgrade schedule.

After a building has been upgraded, follow the instructions below to connect to the wireless and/or wired network.

Connecting to "Reed" wireless

In upgraded buildings, the wireless networks are called "Reed" and "Reed Guest". Staff, faculty, and students should connect to the "Reed" network. Campus visitors will need to connect to "Reed Guest".

Visit our wireless page to learn more about how to connect.

Connecting to the wired (ethernet) network

Connections to the new wired network requires authentication. The access provided depends on your role (e.g., student, faculty, or staff). When you connect to the wired network through an ethernet cable, you will see the prompt below.

802.1x prompt

On an individual computer?
On your personal or Reed-provided computer, enter your Reed username and password (same credentials used to sign into IRIS or Reed email).

On a shared computer?
If you're using a shared computer, such as one used by student workers in an administrative office, or in a shared academic lab space, click Cancel.

If you're on a shared computer in an administrative office and unable to connect to systems such as Banner or Fileshares, contact the CUS Help Desk at cus@reed.edu. Please provide details about the computer you are using (refer to the Reed barcode sticker number) and what systems you're unable to access.

Problems?

Connected to both wireless and ethernet?

If you are on a Mac and connected to both the wireless and wired networks simultaneously, you may experience periodic connection issues. Regular internet traffic will continue to work, but you may suddenly be unable to connect to administrative systems such as Banner or Fileshares. To prevent issues, we recommend being connected to only one at a time-- if using wireless, disable ethernet; if using ethernet, disable wireless. Wireless coverage has greatly improved with the network upgrade. We now recommend using wireless exclusively at your desk (while ethernet is a great backup option).

  • To disable wireless: Click the wifi icon in your menu bar > toggle the wifi button off. Toggle it back on when you are ready to resume wireless.
  • To disable ethernet: Unplug the ethernet cable from your computer. Depending on your setup, the cable could be connected to the back of your monitor, or it could be plugged into an adapter. Contact cus@reed.edu if you need assistance. Plug the cable back in when you are ready to resume a wired connection.
Confirm your IP address

The new network implements role-based access which determines what systems you're able to access. Administrative systems, such as Banner and Fileshares, are restricted to staff and faculty (and blocked for students).

When staff and faculty authenticate to the new network, the computer will be assigned an IP address in the "10.134" range. When students authenticate, their IP will be in the "10.133" range.  A 10.133 IP is on the "Bring Your Own Device" network which has limited access.

On shared computers, cancelling the 802.1x ethernet prompt will result in a 10.133 IP (thus blocking administrative systems). If student employees need to access systems such as Banner, Fileshares, or Etrieve, please contact the Help Desk at cus@reed.edu and provide details about the computer being used--reference the number on the Reed barcode sticker--and which systems they need to access.

How to determine your IP
  • Go to System Settings > click Network from the left side
  • Click on "Wi-Fi" or  USB/Thunderbolt "LAN" connection
